Senator Robbie Gallagher in his recent address to the Joint Committee of Agriculture,
Food & The Marine strenuously highlighted how “critical the mushroom industry was to
County Monaghan, particularly North Monaghan. The mushroom industry at all levels is
vital to the economy, communities and families of County Monaghan, and we depend on it so much."
Senator Gallagher in his address upgraded the Committee’s call of a crisis to an
“Emergency where we are weeks away from a doomsday edge of the cliff situation
where the mushroom industry on the brink of collapse and could be damaged beyond
repair, with the economy of County Monaghan devastated as a result.”
He continued “at present the Emergency situation that presents in the mushroom industry is falling between three government departments with nobody directly responsible maybe it is time to bring the three Ministers together immediately to find a solution."
Gallagher concluded “The actual emergencies within the day to day running of the
mushroom industry are being lost, as they are being put together with environmental
causes in food production practices, carbon footprint, emissions, planning permissions
and environmental assessments. These are huge issues don’t get me wrong but these
are global issues for global response with no short term solution, dealing with them will
not help the emergency that exists within the Irish mushroom industry right now!”
