A Termon, Co. Donegal native, Robbie moved to Monaghan in 1989 as a member of An Garda Síochána, where he served for ten years. He has lived here ever since, with his wife Karen and his two children, Darren and Aimee.
1999 marked a huge change in Robbie's life as he took the leap into business. He began trading as Sherry Fitzgerald Gallagher Property Advisors in Monaghan Town with four employees.
Robbie's political career also began that same year, when he became a member of Monaghan Town Council, serving from 1999 to 2014. In 2004 he become a member of Monaghan County Council 2004 and served until 2016. During his career, Robbie has been appointed the Chairman of County Monaghan Joint Policing Committee and as the Chairman of Monaghan Transport and Environment SPC.
Robbie was appointed to the 25th Seanad Éireann in April 2016, elected to the Labour Panel. In June 2016 he was appointed as Senate Spokesperson for Education.
Currently, Robbie is a member of the 26th Seanad Éireann, he remains on the Labour Panel and is now the Spokesperson for Justice.

As a proud member of Fianna Fáil, Robbie shares the party's passion to create an Ireland for All.
Robbie is dedicated to improving the quality of life in rural Ireland and is eager to see a stronger investment in the Cavan-Monaghan constituency, so that roads, transport and broadband may be improved and easier to access. Tackling rural and cross border crime is also vital to Robbie's mission to improve quality of life in the region.
Health, homecare supports, childcare costs, education, climate change and affordable housing are all issues close to Robbie's heart and he believes that tackling these issues nationwide are necessary components of Fianna Fáil's vision of 'an Ireland for All'.
